At Wine Country Lavender, we love celebrating fellow local creatives who share our passion for nature. In our “Locals Loving Lavender” series, we meet artists, makers, gardeners, and chefs whose work or life is touched by lavender.
This week we're chatting with Krystie, the talented floral designer and founder of Wildflower Girl. Her floral arrangements often weave in native flora and, of course, lavender, creating designs that are as fragrant as they are beautiful.
In this edition, Krystie shares how lavender inspires her artistry, her approach to mindful floristry, and how working with flowers can be a form of daily well-being.
The Birth of Wildflower Girl
Krystie always admired gardens and wildflowers, especially during her time in the Blue Mountains, where bushwalking brought her closer to nature. “I’ve always been drawn to beauty and vibrant colours of flowers,” she says. "Growing up, I admired gardens and wildflowers, and my previous experience in event styling, using dried flowers, sparked my passion for floristry. When I moved to Lake Macquarie, I enrolled at the Newcastle School of Flowers, where I honed my skills and found my true calling in dried florals."
"Wildflower Girl was born after I completed my floristry course in November 2023. Even before enrolling, I had the name in mind, inspired by my love for wildflowers and the joy of foraging. I often found myself driving and stopping to collect flowers from the roadside, bringing that spontaneous connection to nature into my business. After finishing my course, I launched my social media, partnered with local businesses and markets, and eventually joined the Creative Village shop at Charlestown Square. The name ‘Wildflower Girl’ perfectly reflects who I am: someone who loves Wildflowers & nature’s beauty."
Calm, Creativity, and Connection

For Krystie, working with flowers isn’t just creative — it’s restorative. "What I love most about working with flowers is the deep connection to Mother Nature and the sense of calm it brings. Being surrounded by flowers in my studio is truly my happy place—it’s like stepping into my own little world, where I can fully embrace nature’s beauty and find peace and inspiration every day."
"My floral designs are deeply inspired by the natural beauty of wildflowers. Bushwalking in the Blue Mountains, I was captivated by meadows bursting with vibrant colors. This inspiration carries through into my arrangements, where I embrace colour and texture, even with dried flowers. I love creating designs that reflect nature’s spontaneous beauty, so that when customers see them, they’re reminded of a beautiful garden, and it evokes a heartfelt connection."
Sustainability also sits at the heart of Krystie's practice. "I love sustainability so I only use chicken wire for my bases not foam. I don’t think you can get more sustainable than dried flowers. They are so versatile and their longevity mean they just keep on giving."
A Love for Lavender
Among her favourite blooms, lavender holds a special place. "I love working with a variety of flowers, including daisies, statice, eucalyptus, and of course, lavender. Lavender adds a divine scent and a touch of softness to my arrangements. I also enjoy working with wattle, native flowers like proteas, leucadendrons, and banksias, and adding palm species for a bohemian touch. I love the whimsical, unstructured style, and lavender definitely features among my favourites," she says.
I love incorporating lavender in a variety of ways. In my bouquets, lavender adds a lovely pop of color and a calming fragrance. It also features prominently in my dried arrangements and wreaths, where it brings a gentle touch of softness and a lovely aroma. Plus, having lavender in my studio creates a calming atmosphere that inspires creativity and tranquility.
"Lavender has definitely influenced my floral style and creative mindset. Its calming scent and natural elegance inspire me to create arrangements that feel both soothing and naturally beautiful. Lavender also encourages me to experiment with softer, more whimsical designs, and it helps me bring a sense of tranquility and balance into my work."
